minimum wage

General Minimum Wage in Ontario is now $ 14 per hour

The new legislation that increases minimum wage in Ontario from $ 11.60/hour to 14/hour takes effect today. The minimum wage will increase again to $ 15/hour on January 1, 2019.

There are several other provisions of the new provincial legislation that go into effect today:

  • To ensure workers get at least three weeks’ vacation after five years with the same employer.
  • Employees, who usually work more than three hours a day, but who show up to work and are given less than that, would have to be paid for three hours. And if an employer cancels a shift on an employee less than 48 hours before that shift was set to begin, the worker would be paid for three hours of work.
  • To ensure workers get at least three weeks’ vacation after five years with the same employer.
  • Under the law, paid personal emergency leave will be extended to all workers, not just those at a business with 50 or more employees. Bill 148 would entitle all workers to 10 personal emergency leave days a year, with two of them paid. Employers would not be allowed to ask for their employees to give them a sick note when they take that leave, the government says.
  • Ontario’s corporate income tax rate for small businesses decreases to 3.5 per cent from 4.5 per cent.
  • The new legislation expands the 10 days per calendar year for personal emergency leave to all works, not just those at a business with 50 or more employees. All workers would be entitled to 10 personal emergency leave days a year, with at least two of them paid for employees who have been employed for at least a week. Employers would not be allowed to ask their employees for a sick note when they take that leave.
  • The new legislation ensures that part-time, temporary and seasonal workers get paid the same as full-timers when they are “substantially” doing the same job for the same employer.
