Effective October 1, 2017, Ontario has increased its general minimum wage rate from $ 11.40 per hour to $ 11.60 per hour. Special minimum wage rates that apply to liquor servers, students under 18, and homeworkers will also increase at the same time. Minimum hourly wage rate for students (who are under 18 and work 28 hours or less while school is in session , or work during a school break or summer holidays) will increase from $ 10.70 to $ 10.90. Liquor workers will now have to be paid at least $ 10.10 per hour and homeworkers (employees doing paid work in their own home for an employer) will now earn a minimum wage of $ 12.80 per hour.
Ontario government has also introduced legislation to increase the general minimum wage rate to $ 14.00 per hour from January 1, 2018 and $ 15.00 per hour from January 1, 2019. If passed, the rates would become effective on proposed dates.
